2011 Oscar Awards: The Red Carpet Glam

Over the years, award nights has always been the canvas for the best of jewelry fashion. The A-listers deliver a variety of styles, shapes and colors for us all to be mesmerize with awe.

Last nights' Academy Awards showered with emeralds, diamonds, tourmalines and brilliant colors, where the brightest stars shine.

Emerald jewelry continues to shine bright on the awards show circuit, Amy Adams in Cartier gems, Reese Witherspoon and Annette Bening in green wearing a 66-carat emerald drops by Lorraine Schwartz worth $4 million (!).

Fire engine red frocks paired with classic diamond jewels were a smash hit this year on big-stars like Jennifer Hudson in Neil Lane, the host herself--Anne Hathaway in over $10 million of Tiffany diamonds, and newcomer, Jennifer Lawrence in Harry Winston.

Colorful earrings caught the eyes of Hollywood fashion icons Gwyneth Paltrow in Louis Vuitton couture, Natalie Portman, pristine, in red tourmaline tassels by Tiffany and Marisa Tomei in Van Cleef & Arpels. On the other hand, Scarlett Johansson wowed in this statement ring by Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie.

Nicole Kidman looked very regal in a 19th century diamond riviere necklace totaling 150 carats from Fred Leighton, Celine Dion in a Bulgari statement piece and Dame Helen Mirren in Cartier jewels from their Archive Museum Collection.

The Color of Royalty

AmethystImage via Wikipedia

Amethyst has long been a favorite gem of kings and queens for its royal purple hues. It is the most precious of the quartz family, exhibiting colors ranging from pale lilac to deep purple. These royal gems are featured in the British Crown Jewels--worn by Catherine the Great as well as Egyptian royalty.
Various special properties have also been prescribed to amethyst through centuries. Both the Greeks and Romans considered it a strong antidote against drunkenness and drank wine from goblets carved out of the gem. Even the great Leonardo Da Vinci claimed that amethyst could dissipate evil thoughts and quicken the mind. The stone also is supposed to bring peace of mind to the wearer and prevent fatal poisoning.
For some legends , the stone also represents piety, celibacy and dignity. In the Middle Ages, the gem was an important ornamentation for the Catholic Church and other religions. In Tibet, amethyst is considered sacred to Buddha and rosaries are often made from it besides the fact that,it was considered the stone of bishops. Until recently, they still often wear amethyst rings.
February's birthstone, amethyst is mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia and Argentina, as well as in Zambia, Namibia and other African nations. Very dark amethyst in small sizes also is mined in Australia. But the ideal for fine quality amethyst was set by a Siberian variety, often called Russian or Uralian amethyst, which is now considered a defunct source.
Generally, South American amethyst tends to come in larger sizes than African amethyst--Brazil being more popular in amethyst production these days. But the African variety has a reputation for having deeper color intensity and is therefore considered more valuable. The African version also is harder to come by than amethyst mined from South America.
Amethyst comes in a variety of sizes and shapes, including many fancy cuts. Large fine stones are sold in free sizes but generally the stone is cut in standardized dimensions. Paler shades, sometimes called "Rose of France", were common in Victorian jewelry. Banding - darker and lighter zones of color - is also a common occurrence. Occasionally, amethyst is even found combined with its sister quartz citrine into a single stone called ametrine.
The finest and most valuable amethysts are very clear, with very deep color (and they sometimes exhibit reddish or rose overtones). Some stones are so oversaturated with color they have areas that are blacked out, which can negatively impact their value. Heat and irradiation are the most common enhancements to amethyst. The stone, which ranks a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, is considered durable enough for everyday wear. Although, one must care not to expose the gem to excessive amounts of bright sunlight for that can cause its color to fade.

September's Birthstone

An 18kgold banded engagement-wedding-anniversa...Image via Wikipedia

Sapphires - September's birthstone - have been sought after for thousands of years as the ultimate blue gemstone. The ancient Persians believed that the earth rested on a giant sapphire that gave its blue reflection to the sky. Prince Charles even gave Princess Diana a sapphire engagement ring.
A sapphire jewel is one cool blue gem. Its elegance is showcased from a stunning sapphire pendant and a dazzling pair of sapphire earrings to an elegant sapphire bracelet and a brilliant sapphire cocktail ring.
WHo says finding the perfect piece of sapphire jewelry at an affordable price is difficult? A brilliant lab-created sapphire necklace with dazzling diamond accents can start at under $100 . There no better way to say "to chase away the blues" than with a blue gem fit for royalty. For that special celebration - a stunning statement sapphire necklace can start at around $300 - and can cost up to a few million or more if you prefer huge sapphire rocks.

The Heart Immortalized

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - JANUARY 13: Tennis pla...Image by Getty Images via @daylifeWhen it comes to love, what's a more universal symbol than the heart? The traditional icon, perfectly symmetrical joining of two ear-shaped halves adorns Valentine's Day cards, candy boxes and pop culture artifacts of every size, style and persuasion.

Heart-shaped jewelry comes in as many forms as love itself. From classic heart jewelry pendants to heart-shaped diamond rings to stylized interpretations of heart jewelry that boast flourishes, curlicues and differently shaped lobes, heart jewelry is ubiquitous, affordable and timeless.

Consider the heart jewelry made by Tiffany & Co., whose Paloma Picasso-designed Open Heart charms are beloved by young women the world over. Or the countless heart-shaped trinkets and baubles that are exchanged every Valentine's Day. But don't be fooled into thinking heart jewelry is only intended as a symbol of romance. It makes a fantastic gift for graduation, Mother's Day, a debut or any day of celebration where you need it to do the talking for you.

Boucheron honours Cirque du Soleil in diamonds and sapphires

The energy and movement of Cirque de Soleil has been captured in a necklace collection by Boucheron.
The Inspiria collection is composed of 20 necklaces each inspired by a Cirque du Soleil show.

Quidam is represented by diamond strands piercing a black and white diamond and ruby mask, all set in white gold.

East meets West in Dralion, a necklace in which a dragon and lion blend to form a unique creature depicted in orange and yellow sapphires, rubies, diamonds and emeralds set in yellow gold. Dralion stands for the quest for harmony, and can be worn as a brooch.

Criss Angel Believe has been honoured in sapphires with a black prince peering through rabbit ears, bows and petticoat flounces. The purple drop sapphires, yellow, pink and purple sapphires and rubies are set in blackened gold.

The necklaces are on view in an exclusive presentation at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts until August 29, 2010. Montreal is the home of Cirque du Soleil, founded in 1975 by Guy Laliberté. Haliberté teamed with Jean-Christophe Bédos, CEO of Boucheron to celebrate the troupe's 25th anniversary, . Their resulting necklaces are a triumph of time, talent and attention to detail. The complicated, assymetrical and whimsical forms also push the boundaries of fine jewelry design.

Demand for gold jewelry in the U.S. to Remain Resilient”

The World Gold Council expects the gold jewelry demand in the United States to remain soft in the coming months after rising 17 percent in 2010.

Historical gold price in USD and inflation adj...Image via Wikipedia

In its latest Gold Demand Trends report, the WGC states, “The opening weeks of 2011 have been characterized by an East/West divide.” The "disturbance" among investors in Western markets was due to the falling of gold prices in January. On the other hand, physical demand for gold has increased in the east. Strong demand for gold jewelry in markets such as China and India is expected to continue throughout 2011. However, the U.S. market hasn't been mentioned as a potential leader for jewelry demand in the coming year.

According to the report, the long-running decline in U.S. demand for gold jewelry continued throughout 2010, although the pace of the decline did slow somewhat. Fourth-quarter demand for gold jewelry totaled 47 tons, down 16 percent as compared to the fourth quarter 2009. In value terms, U.S. demand rose by a modest 4 percent in the fourth quarter to $2 billion and was up 8 percent on the year to $5 billion. This remains below in 2008 and is down from the peak year of 2006, when U.S. demand totaled $6 billion.

Despite of its low demand in the U.S., gold performed well globally, last year. In addition to the 17 percent increase in demand for gold jewelry, technology demand climbed 12 percent, while investment demand slipped just 2 percent. Overall there was a 9 percent increase in demand for gold in 2010 despite a 40 percent increase in the metal’s annual average price over the past three years. The metal’s average per-ounce price reached $1,225 in 2010, up 26 percent from $972 an ounce in 2009.

Birks Unveils Bespoke Diamond Service with Ontario Diamonds

Northern Ontario is known for fishing and bears... and De Beers diamonds.

A round brilliant cut diamond set in a ringImage via Wikipedia

The Ontario diamonds are not large - most are in the 1 to 2 carat range - but what they lack in size they make up for in sparkle. Most notable is that the diamond 'roughs' are a startling white, whereas most diamonds are an unappealing brownish grey prior to polishing.

The diamond giant has opened the province's first diamond mine, and the first 131 stones plucked from ground were unveiled at Birks Toronto flagship - that is one for every year the Canadian jewelry chain has been in business. "We've sold 12 or 13 already tonight so we are off to a great start," remarked Birks president and CEO Thomas Andruskevich, at a cocktail party to celebrate the diamonds' debut.

In fact, the raw Ontario diamonds are so alluring, Birks is offering customers a bespoke service where they can choose a rough, commission the stone's cut and then have it mounted in their preferred setting.
Each Ontario diamond comes with a certificate from the government indicating the diamond number, which is also etched in the diamond itself along with a maple leaf.

"To be able to hold a diamond in your hand, that is as pure as a dewdrop and to know that it came from your home land, is incredibly inspiring," says, jewelry designer Reena Ahluwalia. She currently works on a necklace set with Ontario diamonds that will be unveiled during the Toronto International Film Festival.

Making Gold Jewelry More Affordable

by Baya Gatter

The Gold Souk, Dubai Gold on display in a wind...Image via Wikipedia
With the soaring price of gold and no indication that the prices will go down, prices have only escalated on gold jewelry. This translates into hesitation in purchasing gold jewelry since your buying power may be more limited.

An option that I would like to suggest and for you to consider, if you are looking to acquire a quality piece of jewelry with a limited budget, is to look at silver/gold combined jewelry.

Aesthetically it is a very attractive and a classy combination and also very practical since you can wear your existing gold and silver jewelry together with it.

If you strictly wear white gold jewelry then this is a win-win combination since it will look like so natural beside your silver jewelry, as well, the accenting gold can also be white. You can choose whichever carat and color of gold you would like combined.

In our jewelry combinations, we use 9kt - 10kt gold because it keeps the price down.

We also use pink gold since we find this color so attractive and alluring beside silver. The cool and sleek look of silver beside the warm and elegant glow of pink has such an appealing and elegant look together.

Most importantly, the AFFORDABILITY factor is the KEY reason for the co-blending of these two beautiful metals. The same gemstone gold ring can cost you hundreds more, say for example $450.00, while its alternative can cost you $150.00.

You see, a quality piece of jewelry can be quite affordable with a little ingenuity, leaving you with a nice chunk of change in your bank account :)

How to Identify a Fake Tiffany Jewelry

Collier de l'ImpératriceImage via WikipediaAt Tiffany & Co., you pay a huge premium for their Quality. In rare instances, you may see an item being sold as new if for instance, the seller is stating it is a recent gift or purchase which was never worn. But, you can find excellent deals on authentic Tiffany silver necklaces, bracelets, and other items on eBay. You can expect a small discount from retail and find used items here. However, these used items are a great place to get bargain prices.

It may be difficult to tell if your jewelry is authentic or fake, so, here are tips on how to make sure you are buying an authentic piece of Tiffany jewelry.

Bracelet and Necklace Links

The sterling silver links on an authentic item are solid and soldered smooth. On fake items, the links are pinched together and have uneven gaps. Link bracelets and necklaces come in only one size and can only be sized by a Tiffany jeweler. If a seller offers you different sizes, you are probably buying a fake.

Sterling Silver Quality

All of the Tiffany & Co. silver jewelry is .925 sterling. It is solid, and not silver plate. Fake silver is plated with rhodium, is very shiny and lacks the luster of sterling silver. Also, many of the fake items have been manufactured with steel and therefore, will be magnetic.

Lobster Clasps

On Tiffany & Co silver link bracelets, the clasp is referred to as a lobster claw clasp because of its shape. This clasp is beefy and thick and along with other Tiffany & Co. clasps, it has .925 stamped on its base. On fake items, the clasp is cheap looking and made from thin, stamped metal.

Quantity Of Items Available & Price

Be very wary of a seller selling multiple identical items. This is a definite sign item is fake since authentic items are hand made and few in number. Also, if a seller states they received items from a wholesaler, they are lying to you. Tiffany & Co. does not distribute their items through wholesalers. Tiffany & Co, never has sales.

If there is a Buy-It-Now price on the item, as a general rule, be wary of any item priced less than one third of the retail price. In regards to auctions, it is very common for authentic items to be sold at starting prices of $1.00.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you take your time and do your homework, you will ensure your purchase decision is a wise choice.

Do not be afraid to ask the seller questions about the item for sale. If seller does not respond, or seems evasive, find another seller. Also, avoid a seller who has chosen to hide their feedback since you can find out a lot by reading feedback from other buyers.

A Rock and Roll-Themed Christian Dior Jewelry by Victoire de Castellane

The Christian Dior Home and Museum in Granvill...Image via WikipediaChristian Dior jewellery designer Victoire de Castellane brings a touch of art history to her latest collection.

The Reines et Rois (Queens and Kings) collection is inspired by Vanitas paintings and sculptures first created by Baroque and later 19th-century Dutch artists. The Vanitas iconography is typically represented by images of skulls, and serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life and therefore the importance of celebrating life "here and now".

The latest Castellane collection consists of a series of 10 rings (representing queens) and 10 necklaces (representing kings) comprised of skulls carved from a variety of minerals, enhanced by platinum and diamond tiaras. The minerals that form the skulls are imbued with their own mythology:

  • Chrysolite or "cat's eye" was used in the Middle Ages to embellish church ornaments
  • Jasper was worn as an amulet in ancient Greece and Rome because it was believed to cure headaches. Jade was thought to be good for the kidneys.
  • Sugalite, a royal purple stone, is said to help clear the mind, allowing purer consciousness.
  • Chrysoprase was carved by Romans to make seal rings; labradorite is a sparkly mineral believed to balance the metabolism and promote wisdom.
  • Pink opal is a symbol of hope, fidelity and purity.

The "headdresses" on each piece consist of crowns, ruffs, necklaces and pendants, all constructed in platinum, including platinum meshwork, and set with diamonds in various shapes and setting styles. Pearls are used as accent stones on some of the pieces.

Ultimately, although some will find the skulls to be creepy, they all seem to be laughing, which lends a sense of irony to this beautifully crafted collection.

Choose your Diamond Ring with the Help from a new Tiffany & Co app.

My amateurish attempt to photograph a diamond ...Image via Wikipedia
Tiffany & Co. has launched an iPhone app aimed at women who are shopping for a diamond engagement ring.

The Tiffany Ring Finder is a handy tool allowing users to view all the styles Tiffany offers by shape, setting, metal and design.

Only interested in rings with side stones? You can easily find them by clicking on the little illustration of a side-stone ring under Settings.

Want to see all the cushion-cut diamond engagement rings Tiffany carries? Click on Shapes, and then on the illustration of a cushion cut ring. Up pop the three corresponding ring styles.

There is also  a foolproof ring sizer works by placing an actual ring directly on the screen and aligning it with the correct circle in the guide. The rings shown are true to size and can be viewed with diamonds of six different carat sizes. Photos of your favourite styles can be saved or shared via email, text message, Facebook and Twitter.

The only downside is, you can't order an engagement ring on the app. But you can send in your contact details and a Tiffany associate will be in touch with you within 48 hours.

Attend a live on the web Christies auction

UK - London - St. James's: Christie'sImage by wallyg via Flickr

Bidding at auction can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially for those who are new to the game. The thought of bidding in a Christie’s high jewelry auction where the stakes easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars is even more daunting. But Christie’s Live is a great way to wet your feet.

A camera allows a view of both the auctioneer and the screen where the lot being offered appears. As the bidding increases, the amount of each bid appears alongside the video. To bid yourself, register for the sale beforehand, then click the large bid button on the screen. It's that simple.

The whole process begins by signing up for My Christie’s, an account where you can track lots, choose account preferences such as currency, and place bids. My Christie’s is so remarkably efficient that within minutes of a JAR brooch (pictured here) that I was tracking being sold, I received an email alerting me of the hammer price. It took a bit of snooping  around the site to initially figure out how to load the Christie’s Live software. But once I called the technical support number and was directed to the download button, the process was very easy. The technician did admit, though, that the Christie’s Live software is more compatible with a PC than a MAC. If you only have a MAC, the technical support team will guide you through a few more steps to get Christie’s Live working smoothly. Christie’s has obviously invested hugely in their website and it shows. Images of each lot can be zoomed in on to show great detail. Condition reports can be accessed online. And all Christie’s auctions rooms worldwide can be viewed through Christie’s Live, so you can “attend” an auction in Hong Kong without ever leaving your home in London, Paris or New York.

The anonymity of bidding online would be perfect for a celebrity or royal. And for the auction-shy who break into a sweat at the thought of raising the paddle, online bidding is a dream.

How About a Jewelry Making Party

Furnace glass beadsImage via WikipediaA great way to sell jewelry is to host a jewelry making party where you create custom-made jewelry for your clients right at the party. Here are some tips to make a successful jewelry making party.
  • Organize all your tools, beads and other components in a good portable tool box. This way, you can save yourself the trouble of finding the right tools and components you need while you work, and speed up the process of making jewelry.
  • Allow yourself at least 2 weeks to prepare before your jewelry making party. You may want to do stock inventory to make sure you get everything you need.
  • Talk to the party hostess to make sure you have arranged a table, good lighting, and a trashcan.
  • Protect the table with a tablecloth or bead cloth.
  • Always bring along a supply of business cards and your appointment book. Pass out business cards to everyone at the party so they will be able to contact you when they want to buy more jewelry or schedule their own jewelry making party.
  • Bring along some of your favorite best-selling designs, latest fashion magazines with jewelry photos, or you can make a scrapbook of all your favorite jewelry designs, so you can use them as your base designs to customize for clients.
  • For custom orders, make up an order form using a word processing software in your computer ahead of time and bring several printed copies to the party. Get the client's name and contact information, write a description of the custom jewelry order, and indicate the price and delivery time.
  • Before a jewelry making party, do the work up front to make sure you have recorded the cost of each bead and component, and determined a fair price to charge. You may also simply calculate a flat rate for basic findings and components, and then add the price of the beads.
  • It is really important that you do this homework before the party because you won't have time once you are there, and it is all too easy to want to please someone and just give them the beads without thinking about your costs. After all, you don't want a loss instead of a profit by giving away genuine beads for the same price as your less expensive glass beads.
  • If you are using bead boxes with bins, use a piece of tape and write the bead/component price on some tape and stick it inside each compartment. Bring along a calculator and pad of paper to your jewelry making party so you can write up the cost of the jewelry components just to make sure you know what to charge.

Are You Thinking About Starting a Jewelry Business?

When I started making jewelry it was just fun. Friend’s inquiries about pendants or earrings really made the dream start to take shape, as it may be happening to many of you. You have started wondering if you could make jewelry for a living. Well, the answer is as simple as YES. Every jewelry artist has started somewhere, and the lucky ones that today show their pieces on jewelry magazine covers started with little or no money and no clues about where the jewelry experience was going to take them.

Making jewelry is therapeutic and profitable, you can make it at home, be your own boss, work at the hours when you feel best and, above all, is a wonderful profession in which you add beauty to people’s lifes through your jewels. Making jewelry is fun!

But why is it that so many jewelry makers, some very talented, fall along the way and never reach their full potential? Mainly, for reasons that do not have to do at all with Jewelry Making, and the most common four are lack of commitment, procrastination, lack of confidence and of course, lack of knowledge about business and marketing techniques.

Starlite Jewelry Designs - Briolette Earrings ...Image by Naomi King via FlickrIt is said that it takes 21 days to leave or start a habit. Changing from procrastinator to effective jewelry maker takes less, I think, but many of the things that will start showing its benefits in the (near) future must start being done today!!! Making a big decision like leaving your “proper” job really need a strong commitment to avoid ending up to your nose with debts and wondering “ What did I do wrong?” If you really want to success in this business, here are 10 tips that will help you start avoiding the more common beginner mistakes:

1. This is your trip, not anybody’s: be very careful with the advice you follow and try to stay always within your own limits and desires. Focus on learning the business and stop listening to what people would do if they were you. Read jewelry websites, marketing and sales articles and never stop learning new things.

2. If you don’t have a studio, set up one. Yes, as small business owners we must sacrifice home spaces to our business. Cluttering the dining room or using a small corner will affect directly into your productivity and creativity. You need space, organization, light, and a door you can close whenever you decide your work has finished for today.

3. Organize your time effectively: work as many hours a day as in a “proper” job…well, the truth is that you will find that you will need more than proper job hours to get everything done! As in point 2, we must also sacrifice time.

4. Set up a blog/website. There are many free webs and blogs to choose from. Avoid repetitive descriptions and talk a little about yourself in every post. Take your time to write a good biography and take a good picture of yourself. Read other websites for examples and study the texts – which ones are more appealing to you, and why? Promote yourself in any way you find.

5. Dare to dream – do not underestimate yourself and try every crazy idea that comes to you mind... all of the biggest jewelry artists of the world were somewhere you are now. They made it because they were bold and trusted their own abilities. That business card design or new packaging boiling in your head deserves, at least, a try. What would you lose?

6. Don’t be scared of asking for favours to relative and friends when you’re starting, and always reward them in any way you can. A favour any female member in your family will love to do to you is wearing your gorgeous jewelry on parties and special events, and of course without having to buy it! They will return it to you after showing your jewelry to many people; of course you should provide them with business cards!

7. Learn to make good pics of your work, or you will never sell online. You can make a simple lightbox and digital camera and tripod are necessary. Learn to use the macro and light sensitivity settings of your camera and experiments with backgrounds and displays. Do as above: research and work!

8. Being a jeweler is not only about making jewelry! You can have other incomes coming from the same source. Teach classes or workshops, sell tutorials online, kits, become a gem seller…and if you have html knowledge you could even offer to make websites to jewelers!

9. Don’t wait until everything is perfect to start, because it will never be perfect. If you’re just a beginner, don’t overprice your products. Be honest and humble with your own work, but don’t miss opportunities to show your work in every way you find.

10. Be very patient. There are no fast success stories in jewelry making. You will have to prove you are really commited to your work If you don’t start now, it will never come!

Beating the Odds in Jewelry Making

Vintage JewelryImage by Sherry's Rose Cottage via FlickrOne day, you buy your first plier and some rolls of wire and make your first loop. Disastrous, of course. You add one bead and painstakingly get to add the hook and you feel like the Queen of Jewelry Land. You actually get it to make a pair. Double feeling of being the queen.

Years go by and you keep working. Adding the hooks does not take hours anymore, so you start adding little embellishments, maybe a spiral loop. During these years, you learn the hard way all the ways you can make mistakes in this business. A few times along the way you decide you won’t make it anymore and maybe ramble with other arts, but pliers and wire always call you back and you find yourself awake at 5 AM because you suddenly woke up with that necklace design in your head. But it’s not easy. It makes you mad to think “why others can?” while you can’t seem to make it. Your artist ego is frustrated. You are tired of going nowhere. Things like marketing, advertising and promoting sound like from another world. A scary world. You’re an artist, you’re not a salesperson. But maybe you can’t quit your day job because you wouldn’t bay your bills selling jewelry.

But then, one day, you start working patiently and silently. Do not argue anymore about your doomed fate and overcome yourself by working seriously, making a business plan that works and give good results soon. You find ways to promote yourself that are easy and enjoyable and learn the right way to work a business. A real one that grows and grows in many directions.

Well, you just lost your ego. Your amazing power to make each of your dreams come true can now arise and materialize. Obviously you don’t need this article at all but if you feel still included in the second paragraph, maybe you should keep on reading this

7 Tips to Be a Better Jeweler: The Ego Issue
According to both Buddhism and Psychology, your ego is a small angry child that never grew up. Instead of thinking rationally, we humans tend to act forced by that little child that, of course, cannot manage with an adult’s issues and just cries and moans and get completely paralyzed in fear of the unknown. Surprising, ah? If you ask yourself too much things like “Why do I never have luck?” or “Why does this always happen to me?”, maybe you’re letting that little child control your life.

The key to personal (and world) happiness is putting that child to rest letting it flow through creative activities, love and self – acceptation, but making choices with a higher conscience. Good choices bring happiness to us and good energy to the Universe, that will flow back to us through opportunities helping us achieve our full potential. As artists, we are even more inclined than many other people to reach a higher state of consciousness, so it should be easier for us to understand this facts.

You can always make it better.
Ego says: “I’m very very good” but really, how good you are? This is a very competitive world and you must be objective about the quality of your work. How can your jewels be improved? Can they be safer? Have you double-checked everything before you package it? Are you selling something that may eventually break or fall off?
Remember that the kind of customer that you will die for is one that looks for quality and durability. A very good question to ask yourself is “Would I pay that money for this jewel?”

You can always treat your customers better.
Ego says “Making that custom gift box is really hard work, and for free!” Please, be more respectful with your customers! Some of the money they pay for a (never forget that) completely unnnecessary item you sell is very hard-earned! From all the jewelers around they’ve chosen YOU! There is always time to add and extra gift for a good customer. As artisans we need customers that come back again and again, and that always think of you first when they need a special jewel for their social events or gifts. We need a customer that speaks wonderfully of our work and bring new customers with them so, what do people find when they meet you, whether if the meeting is at your studio or at your booth? Treat them all the same, whether if they make big of small buyings. Know them as much as you can and try to put all your best efforts to make them feel at home with you.

Work hard to find your own style.
Ego says “Oh, my style is truly unique!” but the truth is that there is almost no such thing in jewelry business, or in any art business. Finding your own way includes a LOT of constant learning and humility. Strive to make the jewel you really dream of and do not feel pressured by what you can sell or whom you can sell to. If your pieces breath uniqueness they will sell out.

Give and Teach as much as you take and learn from others.
Ego says “oh, if I share my techniques everyone will make copys of my work and sell more than me for sure” Really, have you heard how childish that sounds? Change your view about yourself and ask yourself if someone could envision you as a master in your particular style.

Sharing your techniques, whether as downloadable files for small prices (tutorials are usually very cheap) or simply for free like I’m doing now, will not only improve your business karma wonderfully, but also will make you get a lot of respect from learners and professionals alike. Building a good reputation will mean a good percentage of your sales one day, but you have to start now.

Forget about inspiration
Ego says: “I’m an artist, I can’t work if I’m uninspired”…well, and Pablo Picasso said inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. Who do you believe? I chose to believe Master Pablo, of course. Inspired or not, work everyday. I’m sure there are a lot of “office issues” like web updating, taking better pictures of your items, making tags or whatever that you have pending, as we all have, that you can make it on your uninspired time. My husband is an electrician company director and he goes to work everyday, whether if he’s inspired or not! Why should I have that privilege?

You can make your own ways to sell and promote your work
Ego says “I’m an artist, I can’t deal with sales and publicity. That’s not what an artist is supposed to be.” Something I really hear a lot. I truly believe that, as artists, we are even more able to sell ourselves than other professionals because creativity is the real key to publicity success. The true instinct to find beauty is inside every true artist. Though I think is essential to read a good quantity of marketing articles, we have an ability to create that is a natural advantage. Again, change your point of view about yourself and create new ways to promote your work.

Don’t take critiques personally
Ego says “Oh, that person I don’t know at all thinks my jewelry is awful…I am a complete failure!” Well, you don’t like everything, so don’t expect your jewelry to be loved by everyone. What a person says about your work may be influenced by many things that do not have to do with your work at all. Be always ready to follow positive advice inmediatly, but don’t let other people’s feelings reflect on you self image. Remember, maybe that person is also talking through her/his little angry child!

Learning the business takes time and effort. There is no instant success and if there is, it will pass soon leaving you wondering what you did wrong… and making you learn another good lesson – which should always be seen as a valuable thing. I am personally guilty and all crimes said above and in many, many more that have turned into a deeper knowledge of myself, my work as an artist and the world around me. I am very proud of all my mistakes, in fact!

We all are on an endless road of personal growing, with no finish line. There is always someone wiser than us and someone that may need our advice as well. I really hope this article helps you in your way to reach complete success; knowing that you’ve found your way is one of the highest feelings a person can have… and you deserve to have it too.</div>

- In my experience as an artist, its is truly difficult to swallow when there are things you cannot do-yet-that others do without batting an eyelid. Ofcourse, the patience and more practice is always the way to go.

Dropshipping

NEW YORK - JULY 07: A man walks by a jewelry ...Image by Getty Images via @daylife
It is a common question customers ask if a seller offers dropshipping. Some sellers are lucky enough to with smooth shipping, but this is not always the case. It is not always advisable to dropship due to costly risks, especially if jewelry and other expensive goods are involved.

As a participant in dropshipping, your role is basically to market a product whose authenticity and quality you cannot verify to a customer you do not know. The real downside is you have no control over the order fulfillment process. Clearly, many things can go wrong. This approach to sales is not in the best interest of the consumer and therefore can't be a reliable business strategy.

Avoid "Shady" Jewellers

Moonstone cabochons in a jewellers windowImage via WikipediaSome jewellers even appear harmless but within their innocence lies a vicious person who simply want to get money from you. Beware of jewellers who don't tell you honestly about the stone. Some will bedazzled the buyers by giving details about the carats but it isn't the carats alone that matters. You should also ask for the weight of each stone when separated from the center diamond. They ought to know this if they want to give their customers the most honest information.

Some jewellers will offer an affordable diamond ring and advertise it. But if you ask them about it, they will offer you something else most probably more expensive. This is a scam that is prevalent even with other types of products and services. Don't give in to their persuasions. Just request for the ring that they have advertised and if they can't give you that, it only justifies the scam.

Some jewellers display their diamond rings under bright lights. This makes the diamonds look so sparkling. But if you try to get them off the bright lights and look at them under sunlight, the sparks are gone. Don't be fooled by this type of trick; otherwise, you may end up buying a fake diamond.

Some jewellers will find ways to earn more money even at your expense. Don't let them do this to you. It pays off to read about diamonds yourself. When you know what genuine diamonds are, you will be able to easily distinguish the real from the fakes. It will also be easy for you to judge the quality of the diamond in the ring.

Diamond or Cubic Zirconia

A round brilliant-cut cubic zirconiaImage via Wikipedia
Cubic zirconia (CZ) is quickly becoming more popular as a substitute for diamond because of it's closer characteristcs to a diamond than any other gem.

Even trained gemologists, cannot tell the difference between a diamond and CZ with the naked eye. To the untrained eye, CZ looks identical to a good quality diamond. THough, under closer inspection, CZ appears to have slightly less brilliance than a diamond, and has more flashes of color.

The Russians
originally developed CZ for their space program, as an alternative to diamonds that were used in the optics of their lasers. CZs have a refractive index, dispersion and hardness so close to a diamond it's uncanny.

What are some key features that can guide you in telling the difference between diamond and CZ? In order to accurately distinguish the two gems, microscope, or loupe, must be used for testing and verification.

To start, let’s take a look at the hardness factor: Did you know CZ ranges between 8.5 to 9.0 on the Mohs’ hardness scale whereas diamond, one of the hardest materials known to man, is rated 10.

Furthermore, glass (or sand) is rated approximately 5 to 6 on the hardness scale, therefore, dust and dirt will not scratch CZ. Indeed, CZ ca

A scattering of Image via Wikipedian scratch glass just like regular diamonds, making it more resistant to chipping.

One great difference between diamond and CZ is weight. CZs are heavyweights in comparison to diamonds; a CZ will weigh approximately 1.75 times more than a diamond of equivalent size. So basically, a piece of CZ the same size as a one-carat diamond weighs about 1.75 carats. Well…isn’t that interesting?

Contemporary production of CZ is virtually flawless, whereas diamond usually contains impurities and inclusions, or have some sort of defect, be it a feather, included crystal, or perhaps a remnant of an original crystal face (e.g. trigons).

In regards to color—more precisely, the lack of color—only the rarest of diamonds are truly colorless, as most have a tinge of yellow or brown to some extent. By comparison, CZ in most cases can be made entirely colorless, equivalent to a perfect "D" on diamond's color grading scale.

On another note, the facet shapes of some CZs appear different from diamonds
under close inspection with a loupe. Both gems disperse light a little differently. With a dispersive power greater than diamond (0.060 vs. 0.044), the more prismatic fire of CZ can be seen by even an untrained eye.

CZs are not only durable and inexpensive, but just like diamonds, they come in any color of the rainbow, making them even more desirable.

Another difference between the two gems is that CZs are thermal insulators—they reduce the rate of heat transfer—whilst diamonds are among the most efficient thermal conductors—they allow heat to easily pass through them. It can be difficult to tell them apart w
ithout testing the gems’ heat conductivity.

Remember, it is a 50/50 guess to identify a gem by visual inspection; it is not a scientific method of authentication. That is why even certified and degreed gemologists use gemological equipment for testing and verification.

There have been many instances to see if jewelers can tell the difference between diamond and cubic zirconia, just by examining the gems with the naked eye. The difference between diamond and cubic zirconia rests in the price, and in the mind…
